OpenAI continues to attract significant investments, with Softbank now set to open its coffers to Sam Altman's firm. Attracting investments seems effortless for the company behind ChatGPT, which last year raised massive funds, elevating its valuation to an astonishing $157 billion. This momentum continues into 2025, now with the Japanese tech giant Softbank.
OpenAI will have additional funds to utilize, under even more favorable conditions than with Microsoft, as Softbank shows interest in investing between $15 billion and $25 billion. This would make the Japanese group the largest investor in OpenAI, surpassing Microsoft.
Interestingly, this investment is part of the Stargate project, announced by Donald Trump earlier this month, which brings together major tech players like OpenAI and Oracle to develop AI infrastructures across the United States, with a total of $500 billion planned over four years. Softbank's investment marks another significant gamble, following its history of bold investments, with both notable successes and failures.
