OpenAI wants to create their own "intelligent" web browser

In October 2024, OpenAI launched SearchGPT, its own search engine. This marked a significant step forward for the company, which is still exploring its business model, but could also be the foundation for something much larger—a web browser.

According to The Information, the team behind ChatGPT has hired two former Google employees, including those from its Chrome division, to design an application that integrates internet surfing with artificial intelligence. This browser would feature ChatGPT as a conversational agent, assisting users in navigating websites or searching for information.

However, The Information notes that OpenAI's ambitions to compete with Google in this new area still need to demonstrate their viability. The project is in its early stages and may be halted if it fails to prove itself. The market for AI-driven browsers is becoming competitive, with Opera, Arc, and Microsoft’s Edge incorporating AI features. Yet, a fully AI-based browser could face challenges similar to those of SearchGPT, potentially generating misleading results.
