Meta (Facebook) plan to fund a $10 Billion undersea cable project

The social media giant Meta is planning a monumental project that could reshape the global Internet infrastructure. The company aims to deploy its own undersea cable around the world, marking a first in its history, with an investment estimated to exceed $10 billion.

As Meta accounts for 10% of fixed Internet traffic and 22% of global mobile traffic, this strategic initiative aims to ensure the independence of its communication infrastructure. The official announcement of the project is expected in early 2025, which plans to deploy a cable over 40,000 kilometers long.

The cable will follow a "W" route connecting the east coast of the United States to India via South Africa, then from India to the west coast of the U.S. through Australia. This route deliberately avoids geopolitically tense areas such as the Red Sea, the South China Sea, and the Suez Canal.
