Joy or Sadness? Smartwatch can detect your emotions

A new study aims to demonstrate that tracking electrical activity on the skin could enable smartwatches to detect human emotions.

Currently, smartwatches are primarily focused on sports and health applications. Equipped with heart rate monitors, potentially paired with ECGs, accelerometers, and microphones, these devices analyze various data, such as irregular heart rhythms, signs of sleep apnea, and stress management. However, according to this new study, smartwatches could significantly enhance their health monitoring capabilities.

The Tokyo Metropolitan University recently published research highlighting the connection between electrodermal activity, the electric current passing through the skin, and the tracking of different emotions. Their report suggests it is possible to detect mood changes and new emotions through sensors placed on the skin, paving the way for integration into wearable technology, starting with smartwatches.
