The Chinese automobile manufacturer had an outstanding 2024, creating pressure on Tesla.
In the electric vehicle sector, China is emerging as a powerhouse, with projections suggesting that by 2025, more electric cars could be sold than traditional combustion engine vehicles. Within this thriving market, BYD stands out as the uncontested leader, boasting impressive sales that may challenge Tesla in the future.
Despite scandals, BYD continues to thrive, selling electric vehicles at remarkable levels. According to BBC reports, the Shenzhen-based company sold 1.78 million electric vehicles last year, nearly matching Tesla's sales of 1.79 million. However, Tesla experienced a decline for the first time in a decade, with a 1% drop in sales, totaling 1.8 million vehicles in 2023. Meanwhile, BYD's overall vehicle sales surged by 41% in 2024, achieving 4.2 million cars, primarily driven by plug-in hybrids and electric models.
