Apple sued for using "forever chemicals" in its Apple Watch bands

Are Apple Watch bands dangerous for users? According to a study published last December, some are, leading to a lawsuit against Apple. As reported by The Register, a lawsuit was filed against the company in California on January 21, targeting three bands of the popular smartwatch.

The lawsuit concerns the "Sport" and "Sport Nike" bands for the standard Apple Watch, as well as the "Ocean" band for the Apple Watch Ultra. The complaint claims they are made from materials containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals" due to their long lifespan, which can potentially affect fertility or promote certain cancers with long-term exposure.

The plaintiffs argue that Apple should know it's wrong to sell watch bands containing potentially harmful PFAS. They claim the company is aware that some of its products contain these dangerous chemicals, referencing a document from November 2022 where the company pledged to phase out these substances. They seek an injunction to halt the sale of the three bands, as well as monetary penalties and damages.
