Apple secretly worked with SpaceX to create Starlink access for iPhones

In an unexpected development, Apple is collaborating with SpaceX's Starlink constellation and the American operator T-Mobile to provide satellite coverage for the iPhone. This partnership could eventually support several new features.

The emergency SOS via satellite feature has been available on the iPhone since 2022, allowing users without cellular coverage to send messages and contact emergency services when necessary. While currently facilitated by Globalstar, a new alternative is now available for Apple users.

T-Mobile customers with iPhones will soon have access to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. This is not the first time T-Mobile has offered such a service, as Samsung device owners already benefit from Elon Musk's company. Currently in beta with iOS 18.3 for a limited number of users, the feature enables smartphones to automatically connect to Starlink in areas without network coverage. Although initially limited to SMS, future updates promise to include data connections and voice calls, with Elon Musk confirming that medium-resolution images, music, and audio podcasts will be supported.
