GameStop is struggling to recover as its crisis persists. Since 2020, over 1,000 stores have closed. As we begin 2025, it has come to light that additional locations shut down in December. Worse still, GameStop is opting for quiet closures, largely unnoticed.
We learned through social media, particularly posts on Reddit and X, that GameStop decided to close 300 more stores in North America during December 2024 without any official announcement. Many of these updates came directly from employees who lost their jobs, with reports indicating that severance packages and transfers to other GameStop stores were offered, but not to everyone.
Full-time employees, like managers, received severance, while part-time workers faced job loss or, at best, the possibility of transferring to other locations. Since 2020, GameStop has shut down over 1,000 stores and eliminated thousands of positions. Despite turning a profit of $6.7 million in 2024, the company's future remains uncertain.
