Fans of Resident Evil have been eagerly waiting for a new "original" installment of Capcom's franchise for nearly four years. While the release of the excellent Resident Evil 4 Remake in March 2023 provided some action and horror, players looking for the continuation of the RE narrative and who prefer FPS over TPS must remain patient.
Capcom has yet to officially announce Resident Evil 9, although Koshi Nakanishi hinted in July 2024 that he may have found the direction for the next episode. In the meantime, there is some good news: the release date for the upcoming film adaptation of RE has been revealed.
According to Deadline, a new Resident Evil movie produced by Sony and Constantin Film will be released on September 18, 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, the film will be a reboot, much to the delight of fans of the original game. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, and the film is expected to be one of Sony's most significant releases in 2026.
