Apple has launched a new app that allows users to contribute to the improvement of Maps in exchange for financial rewards. "Maps Surveyor" turns the collection of mapping data into a paid activity, but it is not yet available to everyone.
Since its launch in 2012, Apple Maps has continuously evolved to catch up with Google Maps, notably with the recent addition of the Look Around feature on its web version. The Cupertino company has taken a new step by quietly launching "Maps Surveyor," an app that enables users to collect data to enhance the accuracy of Maps.
The Maps Surveyor app, available since March 14, 2025, on the App Store, offers a novel approach to enrich Apple's Maps database. Unlike traditional error reporting methods, Maps Surveyor is not aimed at the general public but operates through a partnership with Premise, a platform specializing in paid micro-tasks. This partnership allows Apple to recruit contributors motivated by financial rewards to complete specific data collection missions.
