Over a billion dollars: Europe prepares record fine against X and Elon Musk

The European Union is preparing a record fine against X, which is owned by Elon Musk, as a response to announced tariffs by Donald Trump.

According to the New York Times, the social media platform is accused of insufficiently combating misinformation and illegal content, violating the Digital Services Act (DSA). Regulators could impose a fine exceeding one billion dollars to deter other companies from similar violations.

This fine is expected to be announced this summer and will be the result of an investigation opened in 2023. Additionally, the EU is conducting a second investigation that may lead to further sanctions, as they believe X has become a hub for hate speech and misinformation.
