The cybersecurity outlook for individuals and businesses in 2024 is alarming. Clicks on phishing links have surged dramatically, highlighting the urgent need to rethink online practices for 2025. This year marked a concerning shift in the cybersecurity landscape, with a 190% increase in clicks on fraudulent links, making phishing a significant threat. Cybercriminals have honed their skills in manipulating victims, and as phishing tactics evolve rapidly, both companies and individuals struggle to keep up.
Netskope's latest Cloud and Threat Report raises the alarm, indicating nearly a threefold increase in phishing click rates in 2024. Over 8 users per 1,000 clicked on fraudulent links each month, a significant rise from just 2.9 in 2023. Researchers attribute this surge partly to cognitive fatigue among victims inundated with phishing attempts, as well as the evolution of scam methods, which now feature near-perfect imitations of trusted brands.
Cybercriminals primarily seek personal credentials to access accounts, with over 27% of attacks targeting cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft services. As more employees use personal applications for work, security teams face increasing challenges. Netskope stresses the need for enhanced security policies, including data loss prevention and real-time coaching, to manage these risks effectively.
