As Twitter (X) has become the new haven for Elon Musk and Trump, alternative networks continue to attract new users. Following Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election and amidst the media attention surrounding Elon Musk's association with the U.S. government, thousands of Twitter users have decided to migrate. Acquired by Musk for over $40 billion, Twitter, now rebranded as X, has become the new meeting place for supporters of both figures, which is not to everyone's liking.
In November, we reported that Bluesky had attracted over 700,000 new users. More broadly, its subscriber base grew from 9 million last September to 14.6 million by early November. However, this exodus appears to be ongoing. According to Cnet US, Bluesky's subscriber count has doubled in the last three months, reaching a total of 30 million users today, fueled by high-profile departures from X, including major outlets in France like Le Monde and Nouvel Obs, as well as the UK’s The Guardian and Spain’s La Vanguardia.
Another alternative to Twitter is Threads, developed by Meta and heavily promoted through Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg has largely complied with Donald Trump's demands, opting to ease moderation on his platforms to align with Musk's policies on X. As of November, Threads had 275 million active users, which has surged to 320 million in three months, equating to about a million new subscribers daily. According to Techcrunch, Meta is aggressively promoting Threads, not only by enhancing its features but also by marketing it to users in the U.S. and Japan.
